I’m a freelance journalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. I have a passion for narrative journalism, particularly if it’s travel related, and this is a small selection of articles that I’ve written over the last few years.
I’ve covered a wide range of topics while masquerading as a freelance journalist, and most of them have been written to satisfy my own desires, passions, and interests. I’ve dealt in a fair number of genres and topics, from an in-depth investigative feature on illegal drag racing in Cape Town, to an extended profile of a prison warder in Johannesburg, an investigation into the history of UFO sightings in South Africa, and the art of reconstructing disfigured dead bodies. I’ve reviewed live gigs, theatre productions and shows, interviewed musicians, sports stars, business men, graffiti artists and poets.
I do have an inescapable passion for travel, and it’s when I can combine this with writing and photography that I’m most happy. I’ve written features on a number of off-beat road trips in South Africa, about unknown West Coast villages, the Garden Route, Cape Agulhas, the Transkei, and Johannesburg. I’ve compiled articles on travelling on the cheap, exploring South Africa’s townships, and the trend of house swapping. Internationally, I’ve had full-length feature articles published about cycling through Zanzibar, backpacking in San Francisco, surviving (and skiing) West Virginia, escaping the clutches of Las Vegas, drinking wine and exploring forgotten castles in the south of France, a rock ‘n roll musical pilgrimage from New Orleans to Tennessee, and falling in love, obviously, with New York City. All my travel articles are accompanied by my own photographs.
I’ve written these articles for a wide range of publications and websites. Among others, I’ve written for the Mail & Guardian, Saturday Star, Blue Train Magazine, Kulula, Mango and 1time in-flight magazines, Mahala, Levi’s Music Magazine, Nike, First National Bank, Cape Town Live, SL Magazine, and MyDestination.com.
